Post Harvest Handling for Improved Quality

The economic success of fruit and vegetable production is highly dependent on postharvest quality preservation. When marketing fresh fruits and vegetables, understanding the processes affecting product quality during storage and transportation is essential to obtaining a premium price and maintaining long-term buyer relationships.
This full-day workshop, hosted by Chesapeake Harvest, is intended for growers who are interested in learning more about handling fresh fruits and vegetables once they have been harvested. It is geared toward producers currently selling into wholesale markets, farmers markets, roadside stands and CSAs, or to those entering wholesale markets for the first time. Growers will learn practical ways to meet industry quality standards related to harvest techniques, packing, grading, pack size, packaging, and shelf-life. Participants will be provided with tools that can contribute to wholesale and retail success.
We will begin with a classroom training portion at (St. Mary’s County Farm Service Agency, 26737 Radio Station Way, Suite B, Leonardtown, Maryland 20650), and then move to Sassafras Creek Farm (23217 Bayside Rd, Leonardtown, MD 20650) for the on-farm portion of the workshop. Lunch and all training materials are included.
